John moved to the United States and lived in Omaha, Nebraska later moving to Butte, Montana where he and his wife remained for the rest of their lives. He was a foreman in a copper mine. According to his brother, James Church, he was a very sociable man who liked to visit and played the violin. He liked the outdoors and liked to hunt small game.

He didn't like the farm, however, and moved to Butte, Montana in 1910. where his brother John was a foreman for the "Black Rock Mine" (copper mine). He remained there until his death in the 1936. He and his wife had two more children (sons) who lived in Butte, Montana as adults. His wife Mary Jane died in the 1930's.
